Work with World Class Musicians!
These are some recordings from past years of the EWS Youth Band rehearsing with world class conductors and musicians.
The EWS Youth Band in rehearsal with Ray Cramer!! Professor Cramer is the retired director of bands from Indiana University, Bloomington. He is one of the world’s most sought after conductors and EWS was honored to have him working with the Youth Band students!
Another clip of Ray Cramer rehearsing EWS Youth Band at Richardson Auditorium. It was an honor to have him work with both the Youth Band students and the Eastern Wind Symphony.
It is a goal to expose the Youth Band students to some of the finest and most important artists in the wind band world. In addition to Ray Cramer, the students had the chance to work with James Keene, the retired director of bands from the University of Illinois. Here is a clip of Professor Keene working with the students on Grainger’s Lincolnshire Posy.
Here is another clip of the EWS Youth Band students working with Professor Keene.
The Eastern Wind Symphony Youth Band serves to artistically engage talented young musicians through the exploration and performance of high quality wind band literature while promoting musical growth, educating students about the history of the wind band medium, and encouraging social and emotional growth.
Our goal is to provide a venue for talented student musicians to perform a variety of advanced wind band repertoire while supporting the educational goals of local school music programs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The EWS Youth Band will perform two concerts each year. Rehearsals and performances will take place at the school of music at a central New Jersey location. In addition to performing an independent concert, the EWS Youth Band will performing in conjunction with the EWS adults at the beautiful Richardson Auditorium on the campus of Princeton University.
Students in the EWS Youth Band will deepen their personal musicianship through the performance of some of the greatest wind band repertoire available. Educational opportunities include:
- Learning some of the greatest wind band repertoire available
- Enhancing advanced ensemble skills

Rehearsal and Performance Schedule
The EWS Youth Band schedule is established to ensure it does not interfere with a typical high school band schedule. A major goal of EWS Youth Band is to support local public school band programs. EWS Youth Band members should be able to participate in this group as well as their local band programs, marching band, other local competition band programs, and other high school activities such as sports, exams (SATs), and social events such as proms and school trips. Directors: for more information about this, please click on the “letter to directors” page.
This year’s schedule for EWS Youth Band requires a commitment of a total of 15 dates, including rehearsals and concerts. All rehearsals typically take place either at Montgomery High School or Hillsborough High School in NJ, and run from either 11:00am -2:00pm or 9:30am – 12:30pm as noted below. Certain sections may not need to arrive until 12:00pm on certain days, depending upon sectional work planned for that rehearsal. Any schedule changes will be communicated in advance. New in 2017, we will be using “Remind,” an online app that allows the director to communicate rehearsal reminders to the group through smart phones.
