The Eastern Wind Symphony Youth Band serves to artistically engage talented young musicians through the exploration and performance of high quality wind band literature while promoting musical growth, educating students about the history of the wind band medium, and encouraging social and emotional growth.
Our goal is to provide a venue for talented student musicians to perform a variety of advanced wind band repertoire while supporting the educational goals of local school music programs in New Jersey and Pennsylvania.
The EWS Youth Band performs two concerts each year. Rehearsals will take place at Montgomery High School in Skillman, NJ, or Hillsborough High School in Hillsborough, NJ. In addition to performing an independent concert, the EWS Youth Band will perform in conjunction with the Eastern Wind Symphony in Richardson Auditorium on the campus of Princeton University in June.
Students will be under the direction of Adam Warshafsky, the assistant conductor of the Eastern Wind Symphony. Students will also work regularly with Todd Nichols, the artistic director of the Eastern Wind Symphony, as well as accomplished sectional coaches from the Eastern Wind Symphony.
Students in the EWS Youth Band will deepen their personal musicianship through the performance of some of the greatest wind band repertoire available. Educational opportunities include:
- Rehearsing and performing selections of the greatest wind band repertoire available.
- Enhancing advanced ensemble skills.
- Performing with talented and advanced peers.
- Coaching and sectional instruction from Eastern Wind Symphony musicians.
- Side-by-side rehearsals with Eastern Wind Symphony musicians.
- Opportunity to observe all rehearsals of the Eastern Wind Symphony.
- Master classes with musicians renowned in their field of performance.
- Clinics with the guest performers of the Eastern Wind Symphony (past performers have included Stanley Drucker, Phil Smith, and Joe Alessi).
- Working with world-class musicians (previous guest conductors and artists include Ray Cramer, James Keene, and Greg Giannascoli).
REHEARSAL AND PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE
The EWS Youth Band schedule is established to ensure it does not interfere with a typical high school band schedule. A major goal of EWS Youth Band is to support local school band programs. EWS Youth Band members should be able to participate in this group as well as fully commit to their school band programs and other high school activities such as sports, school trips, and co-curricular activities.
This year’s schedule for EWS Youth Band requires a commitment of a total of 9 dates, including 7 rehearsals and 2 concerts. All rehearsals take place either at Montgomery High School or Hillsborough High School in NJ, and most run from 9:30am -3:00pm as noted below. Any schedule changes will be communicated in advance.
