Eric Maybury Scholarship
Eric L. Maybury, a graduate of The College of New Jersey and a member of The Eastern Wind Symphony, lived a life filled with happiness where his passion was for teaching music. It was his lifelong dream to bring the joy of music into the lives of his students. As Eric once stated, “All my life I have wanted to teach. That is it. From the first concert I saw in first grade, I knew that I wanted to teach music. When I heard the bass drum and felt the rhythm in my chest, I knew I couldn’t do anything else.”
For a short time Eric was able to fulfill his dream while teaching at Helen Fort Middle School in Pemberton, NJ. However, in his second year of teaching, Eric was diagnosed with cancer. Throughout his struggle with the disease he continued to find the energy to go to school every day and teach. In doing so, he taught all who knew him so much more than just music. He taught us that no matter what obstacles stand in our way, we can overcome them and make each day count.
Eric lost his battle with cancer in April of 1999. Yet, all who knew him remember his joyful, dedicated spirit every day. The Eastern Wind Symphony honors Eric’s dedication to music education through the Eric L. Maybury ’97 Scholarship Award. The award will provide tuition assistance for TCNJ music education majors and will keep Eric’s dream alive forever.
Special gifts to the scholarship award are encouraged. They can be made payable to: TCNJ Foundation, Inc., PO Box 7718, Ewing, NJ 08628. Please specify in the memo section of your check that your gift be directed to the Eric L. Maybury ’97 Scholarship Award.
